Born in Beijing, China in 1988 Jia Nan began her early musical training on the piano at the age of 4 and received her first award in the 1994 Beijing Xi Wang Bei Piano Competition when she turned 6.

 

One year later Jia Nan was admitted to the Primary School at the Central Conservatory of Music and began her studies in cello with Professor Song Tao. In 2004 she was recruited for early enrolment with full scholarship by Bard College in New York, USA at the age of 16 to study with renowned cellist Peter Wiley. Jia Nan relocated to Hong Kong in 2009 to attend the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts where she was a student of Professor Ray Wang, earning her Advanced Diploma in Cello, Bachelor of Music (First Honor) and Masters in Music (First Honor).

During her studies at the academy Jia Nan was invited to perform the Victor Herbert and Dmitri Shostakovich concertos with the Academy Symphony Orchestra. She has won numerous awards including First Prize in the Youth Division of Third Cello Competition at the Central Conservatory of Music, Third Prize in the Youth Division of Forth National Cello Competition of China, First Prize in the Youth Division of Fourth Cello Competition at the Central Conservatory which included the Best Performance Award of Chinese Composition, Third Prize of the Fourth International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians, Second Prize in cello and First Prize in the Chamber Division of Schoenfeld International String Competition.

In her first year at the academy Jia Nan and three of her schoolmates formed their own Gloucester Quartet. The quartet was not only invited to perform at the Trey Lee and Hong Kong International Chamber Music Festival, but also master classes by Shanghai Quartet,Endellion Quartet, Juliet Quartet, Szymanowski Quartet, Penderecki Quartet and Chilingirian Quartet. She has also performed overseas at international music festivals such as McGill International String Quartet Academy in Montreal, Meadowmount in New York and Mount Royal in Calgary to name a few. As a soloist Jia Nan has been invited to perform at numerous master classes including those by Gary Hoffman, Yo-Yo, Ma, Natalia Shakhovskaya, Kirill Rodin, Bernard Greenhouse, Gert Von Bulow, Wang Jian and Richard Bamping.

Today Jia Nan is one of the most sought after cello teachers and performers in Hong Kong. She is currently a cello teacher at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Junior Department and has taught at International Christian Quality Music Secondary and Primary School. As an active performer she is a freelance cellist of Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, a member of Hong Kong String Orchestra, and holds the position of principal cello of Gustav Mahler Orchestra as well as Hong Kong Orchestra. In 2018 Jia Nan and two of her close friends Zheng Yang and Xingji Piao formed Bauhinia Trio and opened YNK Studio offering private cello, violin, piano and chamber music lessons. During the first year the trio has performed at St. John’s Cathedral, University Museum and Art Gallery at Hong Kong University, Hong Kong Fringe Club and Sheung Wan Civic Centre.

Jia Nan’s latest musical endeavour is ‘Secret Location,’ an interesting and unusual music duo formed in 2019 with pianist/composer/arranger/music producer Preston Lau. The duo creates a fine blend of jazz, pop and electronic music, and is currently performing live and recording their first album in the studio.
